Q&A

Does an eye test hurt?
No, there is no discomfort during an eye test – just a few bright lights and the occasional camera flash! A bright light will be shone into your eyes to examine them and for digital retinal photography, there will be the flash of a camera light during this procedure.

Occasionally, it may be necessary to instill dilating eye drops to properly examine your eyes. The effects of the drops wear off after a few hours and your eyes may be a bit sensitive to glare for a short time after. For this reason, it’s a good idea to have your sunglasses handy.

What should I bring to my appointment?
Please bring your Medicare Card and  your private health insurance card  (if you have one). Also bring a list of any prescription medication you are currently taking. Please bring your current glasses and sunglasses and if you wear contact lenses, bring a copy of your contact lens prescription with you also. Before you come in, ask your family members if there is any family history of eye problems or eye disease eg. glaucoma, diabetic eye disease or macular degeneration.

What is the cost of an eye examination for adults?
We are a private billing practice, which means there will be an initial cost to the examination, with a Medicare rebate processed immediately for you. The out of pocket costs will depend on the type of examination performed.
Additional diagnostic services such as digital retinal imaging and OCT scans attract a fee which currently is not claimable through Medicare. For more information on our fees, please call  our practice on 02 9716 85 48

What about children's eye tests and pensioners?
Full time students (including University students) and pensioners are fully bulk billed and there will be no out of pocket fees for the standard eye test. Specialised tests, like retinal photography and OCT scans will attract a fee.

How often should you have an eye examination?
Adults under 65 should have an eye examination every 2 years. For the over 65’s, we recommend a yearly eye examination. Children should have an eye examination in the year prior to starting school and then regularly throughout the school years at 2-3 yearly intervals. Some vision and eye health conditions require more frequent monitoring.

Do we accept all health funds for optical claims ?
Yes, we have on the spot HICAPS electronic claiming – just make sure you have your Health Fund card with you. We can claim the rebate for you and you simply pay any gap amount directly to us.

What lenses are used to make your glasses?
We use some of the best optical lenses on the market from either German or Japanese manufacturers. We believe that only the superior lens technology will provide the best level of optical clarity and vision.
